An Introduction to blueprint reading through basic skills and concepts in reading and interpreting drawings, including orthographic and pictorial visualization, dimensional systems and nomenclature and geometric form control. Upon completion, students should be able to interpret basic blueprints and visualize a part’s features.

Presents the methods used to set up and run an experiment. The course covers the types of experiments commonly conducted in industrial settings. The class will complete an experiment with 2 factors, then one with 3 factors. The experiments will then be analyzed to determine if a correlation exists.

This course builds on basic knowledge of dimensioning mechanical drawings by adding form and feature controls to define parts clearly. Review of basic dimensioning and tolerancing. Topics, as defined in ANSI Y14.5M-2009 Standard, include geometric tolerancing symbols and terms, rules of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, datums, material condition symbols, tolerances of form and profile, tolerances of orientation and runout, location tolerances and virtual condition.

This class will provide the student with an application of Lean in both manufacturing and service areas. Lean manufacturing is a generic process management philosophy derived from the Toyota Production System (TPS). The main focus of this philosophy is reducing waste, improving quality and reducing production time and costs to improve overall customer value. Focusing on implementing a smooth flow of work through the system is also a key aspect of Lean.

This course will provide the student with the skills and knowledge of effective inspection methods. This will include the proper use and application of mechanical inspection equipment, such as micrometers, calipers, surface plates and other inspection gauges. Accurate inspection data will be gathered and analyzed. Method improvement skills are developed through the use of analytical tools, systems design and the application of quality principles.

Metrology is the science of measurement. This class will analyze the process of verifying the capability and performance of measuring and test equipment by comparison to traceable measurement standards. This will include the requirements and standards used by industry today.

This course will cover the purpose and philosophy of quality audits. The types of audits covered are: product audit, process audit and system audit. The proper reporting of audit results is covered in detail. The class is designed to align with the ASQ Certified Quality Auditor criteria.

Root cause analysis is the process of identifying and eliminating the root causes of performance variation. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) methodology for problem-solving. Several tools for determining root cause will be presented in the class.

Six Sigma is a business- and data-driven, disciplined approach to minimizing defects in any process (manufacturing or services). Popularized in the mid-90s by companies such as Motorola and GE, Six Sigma has gained widespread acceptance among thousands of companies. It has proven to be both a time and money saver when implemented properly. This course provides students with an overview of Six Sigma and the DMAIC methodology.
