Adult Education/ESL/GED

Adult Education (AE) provides instruction to students who are 16 years or older and not enrolled in school. Students must pay a $20 registration fee two weeks prior to attending orientation. The fee must accompany a registration/receipt form that students can pick up at their local Adult Education classroom. The fee can be paid on site at the Kearney Center or Lexington Center and by mail or at a campus student accounts office for the other locations. The fee covers instruction from July 1 through June 30.

AE includes classes with paid instructors, one-on-one tutoring by volunteers when available, classes with one or more volunteers and preparation in learning centers. The program is developed according to the individual needs of each community.

Central Community College provides AE classes and GED testing under the supervision of the Nebraska Department of Education. Adult Education is supported at the local, state and national levels.

The program has these major components:

Adult Basic Education for people with less than eighth-grade skills.

English As a Second Language (ESL) for people who want to learn to speak, read and write English.

Citizenship classes - EL/Civics which is civics instruction for immigrants and U.S. citizens.

The college operates Pearson Vue GED testing centers at its campuses in Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings and at its centers in Kearney and Lexington. All computer-based GED tests must be taken at one of these testing centers. There is a fee for taking the GED tests and for receiving the diploma.

GED (General Education Development) instruction is for people who want to earn a Nebraska High School Diploma.

To earn a GED diploma, students must pass the following four tests:

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts: Focuses on the ability to read closely, write clearly and edit and understand written English in context. The test includes giving an extended response.
  • Social Studies: Focuses on social studies reasoning, including civics and government, US history, economics and geography and the world. This test includes giving an extended response.
  • Science: Focuses on science reasoning, including life science, physical science and earth and space science.
  • Mathematics: Focuses on quantitative and algebraic problem solving. An on-screen scientific calculator is available for a portion of the test.

These tests were updated effective January 2, 2014 and are more rigorous to meet new GED Testing Service guidelines.
