Next Beyond the Screen Class Set for April 5 in Grand Island

March 15, 2017

“Man on Wire” will be the featured movie in a “Beyond the Screen” class on April 5 at Central Community College-Grand Island.

This 2008 British documentary chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City. The illegal walk followed eight months of planning with co-conspirators on how to bypass the WTC’s security; smuggle heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; and anchor the wire and adjust its tension to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. After stepping onto the wire at 7:15 a.m., Petit managed to perform for nearly an hour before he was arrested.

The “Beyond the Screen” series is offered free of charge and is open to people who enjoy watching and discussing movies. The movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a discussion moderated by CCC English instructor Jim Kosmicki to follow.
